1901年，徐锡麟应聘来绍兴府学堂任经学兼算学教习，后升"副办"（副校长）并兼测绘体操教习。他认真执教，自编教材，自制教具；宣传反帝反清之革命思想，师生中从其革命者甚众。
In 1901, Xu Xi-lin was invited to Shaoxing Prefecture School. At first, he worked as a teacher of study of Confucian Classics and maths as well. Later, he was promoted to be vice-principal, concurrently a teacher of mapping and physical training. He exerted himself in teaching, writing teaching materials and making teaching aids himself. Affected by his ideas of anti-imperialist and anti- Qing Dynasty, a great number of teachers and students joined the revolutionary ranks.
